How we created a truly tailored bathtub for one of our clients

Writer: Mark ElsterMark Elster

When we learned that this AOME project would include a custom bathtub, we proposed to our client that we take this opportunity to make it truly tailored to her profile.

1️⃣ We used slabs of foam to capture the curve of her hips and shoulders, ensuring it wouldn’t strain her neck or be too far back, and we carved the foam as many times as needed to ensure we got the perfect fit.

2️⃣ We came up with a solution to save the cost of shipping this physical prototype to Indonesia, where the bathtub would be manufactured... 💡

3️⃣ We decided to perform a 3D contour scan with one of our phones and then modeled it in 3D for the manufacturer to reproduce in the material!

4️⃣ Before moving to production, we created a small maquette to ensure everything was in place.

Recently, we had the pleasure of receiving the finished bathtub from Indonesia, ready to be installed in the custom home we are building for our client.

We can't wait to see it in place!

Note: Capturing the client’s profile took just 30 minutes! However, the process was the result of a team effort, combining the ingenuity and hands-on craftsmanship of the entire AOME team to find the perfect solution.

Carrying out this process brought us great joy, as it aligns with one of our core principles: Making

We’re makers, and we are happy to see our clients also engage in the making process. Her being physically present and collaborating to shape the tub incrementally to her profile made this piece not just a bathroom element. This experience, carved into the object, transforms it into a living memory and a story that she will share with those who step into this room. This is what we aim for in every project: creating a deeper sense of meaning and connection to our client’s home 💙
